Mayor Pro Tempore

Mayor Pro Tempore

  • Matthew Hinton

Overview

This position is appointed by the Board of Aldermen for a 1-year term.

When acting as the mayor pro tempore, an alderman ceases to function as an alderman, instead taking on the duties, powers and responsibilities of the mayor.  As such, an alderman serving as the mayor pro tempore may not vote as an alderman. When the mayor pro tempore is presiding at a meeting of the municipal governing authorities in the temporary absence of the mayor, the mayor pro tempore is acting as mayor with the duties and powers of a code charter mayor and not as an alderman. The vice mayor, when acting as such, can only exercise the powers of mayor, and cannot simultaneously exercise his or her powers as a board member. When an alderman is serving as mayor pro tempore, he only has the voting powers of a mayor as set forth in Section 21-3-15 and may not vote as an alderman.
