PARK AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD

An advisory board, to be known as the City of Ocean Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, is hereby created in and for the city.

Purpose.

The City of Ocean Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is hereby established to advise the parks and recreation director, the mayor and the board of aldermen with regard to the creation, maintenance and planning of supervised recreational facilities and programs in the city.

Composition.

The board shall consist of seven members who serve staggered terms, to maintain continuity. The members shall be residents of the city. The seven members shall be appointed by the board of aldermen from a list of interested citizens. There shall be representation on the commission of citizens from each city ward. The parks and recreation director shall serve as chairperson. Reappointments shall take place during the regular meeting of the mayor and board of aldermen in the month of October, or at the discretion of the mayor and board, with all members to serve until they have resigned or been replaced. Of the initial board, two positions shall be vacated as of the first Monday of October 2023 and three positions shall be vacated as of the first Monday of October 2024. At the end of each initial term, such positions shall be filled with appointments of three years. Members may be reappointed to any number of successive terms.

Function of Parks and Recreation Director and Assistant Parks and Recreation director.

The park commission director, or equivalent city official, shall plan, coordinate and administer the activities involving the park system and recreational program in accordance with the goals, policy and procedures approved by the mayor and board of aldermen, and will be under the direction and supervision of the mayor and board of aldermen and the chief administrative officer. He is to be an ex officio member and chairperson for the advisory board. The Parks and Recreation Assistant Director  is to be an ex officio member and secretary for the advisory board. As secretary for the advisory board he shall keep minutes of all meetings, coordinate all correspondence for the board and serve as liaison to the mayor and board of aldermen.

Meetings.

Meetings are to be held on a monthly basis, initially on the second Monday of each month. The time of the meeting is to be set by the advisory board. The location for meetings will be the office of the Ocean Springs Parks and Recreation located at 400 Alice Street.

Compensation.

All members of the advisory board shall serve without compensation.
